Unlike the Surface Pro, the first iteration of the Surface Laptop had few bugs when it was released. There wasn’t much to complain about, other than the price and the limited range of ports. People had been hoping for a classic Surface clamshell PC to compete with Apple’s MacBook, and Microsoft finally delivered with the Surface Laptop.
Microsoft has released the sequel to the Surface Laptop only 16 months after the first. Like the Surface Pro 6, not much has changed, but the improved processor and new black colour option make this computer even more appealing. It’s not a perfect upgrade, though; the new Surface Laptop is more like a generational 1.5 update than a 2.0. This is the rationale behind it.
For the purposes of this review, Microsoft provided use of a Surface Laptop 2. The $1,299 test unit is black and features an Intel Core i5 8250U, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage space. Surface Laptop 2 Core i5 models with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage start at $999 (platinum only), while the top-end Core i7 model with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage costs $2,699. Platinum, black, burgundy, and cobalt are the colours available.

Although the 15-inch AMD-powered Surface Laptop 3 has received a lot of attention (some positive, much negative), Microsoft also offers a smaller, more portable Surface Laptop 3 (13.5-inch). Surface Laptop 3 13.5 looks like an incremental update, like the new Surface Pro 7, but the underlying hardware improvements make for a fantastic new computing experience.
In no uncertain terms, the Surface Laptop 13.5 has my undying admiration. But has Microsoft been able to redeem itself from the underwhelming 15-inch version by convincing me that the new Surface Laptop 3 is worth my time over the Surface Laptop 2? Certainly, it did.
The lowest-priced Surface Laptop 3 13.5 cost $1,000 when it first appeared on the market. Microsoft has released an updated Surface Laptop, the Surface Laptop 4, that also begins at $1,000. You may probably find a Surface Laptop 3 for less money now, but if you want something smaller and less expensive, you should look at the new Surface Laptop Go.
